How Honda Tire Size Calculator Works
The Honda Tire Size Calculator compares an original tire size with an alternative tire size and estimates the effects on overall diameter, circumference, speedometer reading, and theoretical ground clearance. It accepts standard tire notation such as 195/65R15.
Results are mathematical estimates, not confirmation of vehicle fitment, wheel clearance, load rating, or manufacturer approval. Always confirm with your vehicle’s placard and a tire professional before purchasing or installing tires.
Calculation and Formula
Parsing a tire size
A tire size like 195/65R15 breaks down into three parts:
- 195 = section width in millimeters
- 65 = aspect ratio (sidewall height is 65% of width)
- 15 = rim diameter in inches
Calculations
Sidewall mm = width × (aspect ÷ 100)
Overall diameter mm = (2 × sidewall mm) + (rim inches × 25.4)
Circumference mm = π × overall diameter mm
Diameter difference % = (alternative − original) ÷ original × 100
Theoretical clearance change mm = (alternative diameter − original diameter) ÷ 2
Speedometer estimate
If you enter an indicated speed, the calculator estimates actual speed using the ratio of the alternative tire diameter to the original tire diameter. A larger tire makes the speedometer read low; a smaller tire makes it read high.
Revolutions per mile are derived from the circumference: 1,609,344 mm per mile divided by circumference in mm.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Will these tires fit my Honda?
This tool does not confirm fitment. Check your vehicle placard and consult a tire professional.
2. What does the aspect ratio mean?
It is the sidewall height as a percentage of the section width.
3. Why does tire size affect the speedometer?
The speedometer is calibrated for the original tire diameter; a different diameter changes distance traveled per revolution.
4. Is ground clearance change guaranteed?
No. It is a theoretical estimate based on radius difference only.
5. Can I compare more than two tires?
The tool compares one original and one alternative size at a time.
6. Are load ratings considered?
No. Load rating and manufacturer approval require independent verification.
7. What units are used?
Millimeters and inches for size; percentage for diameter difference; mph or km/h for speed.
8. Can I print or download results?
Yes. Use the download or print buttons in the tool.
